SEO scams are nothing new. In fact, they’ve been around as long as the SEO industry itself!
But there are two scams in particular that continue to fool people time and time again. Plus, with the rise of SEO “gurus” and “experts”, these scams are only getting more popular.
So, without further ado, here are the two most popular SEO scams of all time, And today, we’re going to debunk them once and for all.
SEO Package Scam
The SEO company offers you an SEO package that has a whole list of activities they will do for you each month.
You will most probably see different packages with different levels of SEO activities: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond plans, remember these?
The price for those packages is usually very low, starting from around $50/month.
How does it work?
The SEO company will do some basic activities like creating profiles on social media, adding a few keywords to your website and submitting it to a few directories.
That’s it! They will not do anything else and they will not improve your website ranking. When you tell them about no improvements, they will tell you that SEO is a long-term process and it takes time to see results.
Why its a scam?
Each website is unique and, as such, will require a different level of optimization to achieve the desired results. A pre-defined SEO package is never a good fit for any website that is looking to improve its ranking.
The SEO package scam is one of the oldest SEO scams in the book. It’s very simple and it’s very easy to fall for it. The scammers are counting on you not knowing anything about SEO and they will promise you the world, making you believe that your website will be number one in no time.
You may think that you can’t rank without doing all those activities, but this is not true at all. There are plenty of ways to improve your website ranking without doing any of those shady automated activities.
The problem with this scam is that there are no guarantees in SEO. You can do everything right and still not rank number one for your targetted keywords within your desired timeframe. And even if you do rank number one, there’s no guarantee that you will stay there for long, unless you are backed by a professional SEO company.
This is why it’s important to do your research and find a reputable SEO company that will actually help you improve your website ranking, instead of promising you the world and delivering nothing but a low-quality spammy links package, that’s executed by automated software.
A reputable SEO company will take the time to understand your business, your goals and your target audience before starting any work on your website.
Some websites have excellent content and great backlink profiles but need help with on-page optimization.
Some websites have great technical SEO but need more backlinks to improve their rankings.
Some websites are well optimized for social media, but lack in-bound links.
No two websites are the same, and this is why it is important to work with an SEO company that understands this fact and can tailor a custom SEO package for your website.
If you are being offered an “SEO package” by an SEO company, be sure to click the “close” button of the tab and run away from the site as quickly as possible!
SEO is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and any company that tries to sell you an SEO package is most likely a scammer. Some SEO companies will try to sell you a “one size fits all” SEO package that contains generic tasks that are not specific to your website.
The Google Algorithm Scam
The Google algorithm scam is a more recent SEO scam and it’s becoming popular. It’s also known as the ‘blame Google’ tactic to hide an SEO company’s failures. When an internet marketing agency fails to deliver results, they start blaming Google for not showing results.
How does it work?
The SEO agency will promise you certain results, like top rankings within certain months, or attain a specific number of backlinks or a certain amount of keyword-rich content, within a certain period of time.
When the target is not achieved and results are not delivered, they pass the blame on to Google, saying that the algorithm has changed and that’s why the results were not achieved.
They will pitch you with more aggressive campaign spending that will only benefit their pockets and not your business.
I’ve come across many SEO companies that consider clients as a source of recurring income. They will keep pitching you new services, even if the old ones haven’t yielded any results. This is unacceptable and it’s a clear sign of an SEO scam.
They are counting on you not knowing anything about SEO and they will promise you the world, making you believe that your website will be number one in no time.
Unfortunately, innocent companies still fall into this trap and lose a lot of money and time in the process.
Why its a scam?
Google has always been clear about the fact that they do not guarantee top rankings or first page results for any website. In fact, their Webmaster Guidelines clearly state the following:
“There’s no absolute guarantee that you’ll rank number one on Google for any given keyword or phrase, nor is there an absolute guarantee that you’ll never lose your ranking for a particular keyword or phrase.”
If you or your (current or previous) SEO provider uses any unacceptable SEO tactics to gain better rankings, your website could be penalized by Google, which could result in a drop in rankings or even get your website banned from Google.
This will end you up with no rankings, and a lot of wasted money. Plus, you will lose faith in the entire SEO industry, which is not good for business.
The only way to make your website Google algorithm-proof or Google penalization-proof is by adhering to the Google guidelines and best practices.
The Google algorithm is always changing, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t achieve the desired results if you are working with a reputable SEO company.
In fact, many businesses have achieved top rankings in competitive industries by working with the right SEO partner and keeping their focus on user experience, than mere rankings.
The real difference between a good and a bad SEO company is that a good one will always start your SEO campaign with appropriate corrections that will neutralise all the past bad SEO tactics used on your website.
A good SEO company will also focus on user experience by providing high-quality content, making sure all the pages are optimised for both users and search engines, monitoring your website’s progress regularly and keeping you updated with monthly reports.
Remember, the Google algorithm is a complex system that is constantly evolving, and it can take months to see results from SEO efforts, depending on your site’s current level of optimization.
Any company that promises instant or overnight results is likely trying to scam you!
I want you to look at the Google Algorithm update as a blessing. The algorithm updates only affect those websites that are violating the Google Guidelines to achieve higher rankings. If you are not breaking any SEO rules, then you have nothing to worry about, ever.
SEO companies can guarantee ‘improvements’, but not a particular spot on the search engine results pages.
There are a few key things that you should know about the Google Algorithm Update scam:
Google keeps updating its algorithm all the time, and there is no specific update that they call “The Google Algorithm Update”.
There is no such thing as a “Google Penalty” – if your website does not rank well in search engine results pages (SERPs), it is most likely because you have not implemented proper SEO tactics.
If your website is being penalized by Google, you will be intimated by Google through the Search Central Console.
The best way to stay updated about Google algorithm changes is by following the Webmaster Central Blog.
If you are worried about your website’s rankings after reading about a certain Google update, the best thing to do would be to speak to your SEO company and see if they have made any changes to your website.
Bad SEO companies will use this scam to scare you into buying their services, which will only end up damaging your website even further.
Any company that claims to be able to help you “beat the Google algorithm” is likely trying to scam you.
If you have been affected by the Google Algorithm Update, it is likely because you (or your SEO company) were using black hat SEO tactics. The best way to recover from this is to stop using these illegal methods and switch to white hat SEO tactics, which are approved by Google.
The Google Algorithm Update is not a hoax – it is real, and the algorithmic updates have affected many websites since it was first introduced.
However, the updates are not as devastating as some SEOs make them out to be. If you are using legitimate SEO methods, then the Google algorithm update is your best friend.
There are many levels of optimization on any given website.
Content Optimization: Checking for grammar, spelling, plagiarism, how well the content is written, etc.
Page Optimization: Titles, meta descriptions, header tags, etc.
Site Optimization: Internal linking structure, site speed, crawlability, etc.
Technical Optimization: Improving website speed and performance.
User Experience Optimization: Make sure your website is mobile-friendly and easy to use.
CTA Optimization: Traffic without conversions is pointless. Make sure your website has a clear call to action for higher conversions.
User Engagement Optimization: Keep users on your website for longer periods of time by adding engaging content, such as videos and images.
Off-page SEO: Backlinks from other websites, anchor text distribution, social media signals, etc.
Google takes all of these things into account when ranking a website in its search engine results pages.
If you are not seeing the results that you want from your SEO efforts, it is most likely because you have not optimized all of these areas. You need to focus on optimizing all of these facets of your website if you want to see improved rankings.
There are no one-size-fits-all solutions in SEO – what works for one website may not work for another. The amount of SEO work needed to rank a website highly depends on the website’s current level of optimization and what areas of SEO is it lacking in.
This is why it is important to work with a qualified SEO company that can analyze your website and give you an accurate assessment of the work needed to improve your rankings.
I hope this article has helped clear up two of the most popular SEO myths and scams.
Remember, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Do your research and work with a reputable SEO company to ensure that your website is properly optimized for better search engine visibility.
